[What you eat](http://www.ornishspectrum.com/proven-program/nutrition/): Foods are neither good nor bad, but some are healthier for you than others. So, we categorized foods from the most healthful (Group 1) to the least healthful (Group 5). The more you move towards the healthier end of the spectrum, the more you improve in ways we can measure and the better you feel—at any age. You can’t fail.
[How you respond to stress](http://www.ornishspectrum.com/proven-program/stress-management/): Chronic stress is linked with an increased risk of almost all illnesses as well as premature aging. The good news is that stress is primarily a function of how we react to the world, and practicing stress management techniques on a regular basis empowers you to cope with and manage in healthier ways. Your fuse gets longer.

So, do whatever activity you enjoy. Moderate exercise improves a wide range of conditions and increases stamina, strength, and flexibility.

Study after study have shown that people who are lonely, depressed, and isolated are many times more likely to get sick from all causes than those who have a strong community. For more than 36 years, [Dr. Dean Ornish has directed a series of scientific research studies](http://www.ornishspectrum.com/proven-program/the-research) showing, for the first time, that the progression of even severe coronary heart disease – as well as other chronic conditions such as Type 2 diabetes and early-stage prostate cancer - may often be slowed, stopped, and even reversed by making comprehensive lifestyle changes. He recently directed the first randomized controlled trial demonstrating that comprehensive lifestyle changes may stop or reverse the progression of prostate cancer. His current research showed that comprehensive lifestyle changes affect gene expression, "turning on" disease-preventing genes and "turning off" genes that promote cancer and heart disease.
These findings are giving millions of people worldwide new hope and new choices, options that are more caring and compassionate that are also more cost effective and competent.
